LACF Scholarships in Alberta
Four regional scholarships exist in Alberta. Three are dedicated to students enrolled in the newly accredited program of Landscape Architecture, School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape (SAPL) at the University of Calgary and the other, to students graduating from the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) and intending to pursue further studies in LA. The scholarships are:

1. University of Calgary MLA
Context and Description
A scholarship fund was initiated by the Alberta Association of Landscape Architects and representatives of the landscape architecture program at the University of Calgary under the auspices of LACF.
This scholarship of $1,000 is awarded annually to a student in either first or second year of the University of Calgary Master of Landscape Architecture program who has demonstrated excellence in both design creativity and academic performance.
Criteria and Award Process
School faculty nominate a candidate who exemplifies the objectives of this scholarship. The nomination is reviewed and approved by the LACF Board.

LACF is grateful to members of the CSLA, AALA and University of Calgary communities who contributed to help establish this scholarship. This scholarship fund is not yet fully endowed and fundraising activities are ongoing. Thank you for your support.
2. Canadian Landscape Charter / University of Calgary Scholarship
Context and Description
An endowment fund was initiated by Honourary CSLA Member Dr. Mary-Ellen Tyler, Professor and Interim Associate Dean, School of Architecture Planning and Landscape, University of Calgary in collaboration with LACF and CSLA to create the Canadian Landscape Charter University of Calgary Scholarship. The CSLA Canadian Landscape Charter is the profession’s declaration to recognize, manage, protect and celebrate Canada’s landscapes.
This scholarship of $3 000 recognizes a student in the University of Calgary Master of Landscape Architecture program whose work exemplifies the Charter principles and who, it is anticipated, will carry the spirit of the Charter forward into their future practice of landscape architecture.
Criteria and Award Process
School faculty nominate a candidate who exemplifies the objectives of the scholarship. The nomination is reviewed and approved by the LACF Board.

LACF is grateful to honourary CSLA Member Dr. Mary-Ellen Tyler, Professor and Interim Associate Dean (Planning + Landscape Architecture) at the SAPL and Cathy Sears, LACF board member and scholarship champion for University of Calgary, who initiated and carried the idea of creating this scholarship forward. Thanks also to Dr. Tyler and EXP’s Calgary-based office who jointly pledged $25 000 to the Canadian Landscape Charter Scholarship endowment fund over the next 5 years bringing together both professional and academic landscape architecture communities. Future fundraising efforts will aim to fully endow the fund.

3. Andre Schwabenbauer Scholarship | NAIT*
Context and Description
The LACF Andre Schwabenbauer Scholarship was established in 2006 in memory of Andre Schwabenbauer, a former CSLA president. In 2018, with the consent of the Schwabenbauer family, the original scholarship was restructured into two distinct and fully endowed scholarships: one at the University of Manitoba, Andre’s alma mater, and the other at Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) where Andre taught.
This scholarship of $1,500 is awarded to a graduate of the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology program in Landscape Architecture Technology. It recognizes excellence in design, honouring Andre’s belief that landscape architecture is first and foremost a design profession.
Criteria and Award Process
*Students must apply.
This scholarship is awarded to a NAIT graduate of who is currently enrolled in a program of study at an accredited undergraduate or graduate landscape architecture program in Canada or the United States. To apply, applicants must provide the following documents to the Chair of the LACF Scholarship Committee by September 30:
- A letter of application documenting current educational status, background and professional goals and interests
- A letter from the university where currently enrolled that documents enrollment and level of study
- An unofficial transcript from NAIT
The scholarship will be awarded to the applicant who earned the highest grade average in the two final-year design courses at NAIT (LANT 2320 and LANT2420). Preference is given to an applicant who has not already received this scholarship. The LACF Scholarship Committee reviews applications and recommends a nominee to the LACF Board for review and approval.

Who Was Andre Schwabenbauer?
Andre Schwabenbauer, AALA, FCSLA was a talented and respected landscape architect based in Edmonton. A successful practitioner operating his own firm, he had a deep understanding of the duty of service to one's profession. He served as President of the Alberta Association of Landscape Architects, as AALA representative to the Board of Governors of the CSLA and then as CSLA President. He was inducted into the CSLA College of Fellows in 2003.
The LACF Andre Schwabenbauer Scholarship was established in 2006. 4. Maglin-LACF Scholarship
A scholarship of $5,000 will be awarded to one outstanding student studying landscape architecture each year to a student at the University of Calgary, MLA.
Applicants should be:
a) Currently enrolled in the program listed above;
b) A Canadian citizen or permanent resident;
c) Nominated by the faculty; and
d) Demonstrate excellence in their studies.
Note that a student may receive this scholarship in addition to other LACF Scholarships – there are no restrictions on the attribution of the Maglin-LACF Scholarship.
