Final Research Report from Robert N. Allsopp Urban Design Fellow Kristina Zalite
During the 2024 Robert Allsopp Fellowship, Kristina Zalite (MBCSLA, settler of European ancestry) studied approaches to settler-decolonization as well as approaches to ecological restoration to seek ways to augment planting plans for greater plant success. The study is situated in the Lands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, səlilwətaɬ, W̱SÁNEĆ, Stó:lō, Kwantlen, and Semiahmoo peoples. The study includes an interpretive strategy and ethnographic research informed by the Relational approaches of Opaskwayak Cree Scholar Shawn Wilson and Māori Scholar Linda Tuhiwai Smith. Methods included in-depth conversations with settler and indigenous allied professionals. Study findings include “Intentional Planting Design” principles that center around nurturing plant allies and plant relations; situating the site locally, culturally, and ecologically; and designing for principles of time, production, and regeneration. A collaborative pilot project is underway with the non-profit Co:Here Housing Foundation and the Urban Food Forest Foundation to apply the findings.
More LACF-Funded Research Reports
The following grant-supported research projects have been completed and can be viewed on the LACF website:
- Van Thi Diep submitted a final report for Reclaiming the Passive Voice: Stories of Women Who Leave Landscape Architecture, which was also presented virtually in November.
- Tasnim Ferdous completed the project Nature-based Solutions for Climate Resilient Shorelines.
- Liam Doyle finished work on Clarifying the Relationship Between Plant Provenance and Native Insect Pollinator Communities.
LACF Awards Special Research Grant to Heather Braiden and Vincent LaRivière for their project that studies the impact of LACF-funded research on the profession
Heather Braiden, assistant professor of landscape architecture and Vincent LaRivière, full professor in information sciences, have been awarded the Special Grants prize from the LACF for their project, "Tracking the impact of research: Quantifying the results of the LACF-funded research in landscape architecture in Canada." The pair offers combined data mining and landscape architecture expertise to extract trends and quantify the range of knowledge produced through the grants to better understand the impact of LACF-funded projects and inform design practice. As described below (appendix A), the project has a fixed budget of $20 000, including the indirect research fees of 15% or 3 000$.
Thank You For Your Support!
LACF ran another successful year-end holiday giving campaign again this year, thanks to the ongoing generosity of our supporters.
We are excited to share that more than $17,000 was raised in support of LACF's research grants in December. THANK YOU!
If you missed the campaign and still want to get involved, there's no wrong time to support landscape architecture students and emerging researchers - make a contribution today!
