SUPPORTS MULTI-MEDIA PROJECT ABOUT OUR EXTRACTIVE INDUSTRIES
The Canadian Council for the Arts recently announced that a cutting-edge, multimedia exploration of our extractive industries and mineral lives is set to represent Canada at the 15th International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale. LACF is proud to support this ground breaking exhibit as a special project to the amount of $10 000.
Provocatively called EXTRACTION, this special project will feature an installation, film and book addressing the ecologies and territories of resource extraction.The project explores the architectures, histories and economies of Canada’s culture of resource extraction, to profile the rise of a “global resource empire” where, in the words of revered political economist Harold Innis, “Canada has emerged as a political entity not in spite of geography, but because of it.” Through the lens of the territorial infrastructures and political ecologies of resource urbanism, EXTRACTION engages contemporary and historic media across a range of cultural, spatial and industrial views. It brings together perspectives from business, history, art, activism and elsewhere, to radically rethink Canada’s global position, as home to 75% of our planet’s prospecting and mining companies.
The team is led by landscape urbanist Pierre Bélanger and includes: OPSYS, a design and media organization managed by Christopher Alton and Zannah Matson, in collaboration with Geoffrey Thün, Kathy Velikov and Colin Ripley of the architectural firm RVTR,Nina-Marie Lister with Ryerson University’s Ecological Design Lab, and Kelsey Blackwell of Studio Blackwell.
The production of a multimedia exhibition project features contributions from prominent Canadians including Michael Awad, Jennifer Baichwal, Edward Burtynsky, Nick de Pencier, Eriel Deranger, Max Haiven, Thomas King, Alessandra Ponte, John Van Nostrand, Mel Watkins and Suzanne Zeller to name a few.
EXTRACTION premieres in Venice: May 27 to November 27, 2016. The Venice Architecture Biennale is the world’s most prestigious showcase for new design projects by emerging talent, attracting over 350,000 visitors every two years. The 2016 Edition is curated by Chilean architect and founder of ELEMENTAL, Alejandro Aravena.

LE PROJET 'EXTRACTION' REPRESENTERA LE CANADA AU BIENNALE DE VENISE, 2016.
Le Conseil des arts du Canada a annoncé récemment que l’exploration multimédia avant-gardiste de nos industries extractives et vies minérales représentera le Canada à la 15e Biennale internationale d’architecture de Venise. La FAPC est fier de soutenir cette exposition innovatrice pour un montant de 10 000 $ en tant que projet spécial.
Le projet EXTRACTION, au nom résolument provocateur, présentera une installation, un film et un ouvrage explorant les écologies et les territoires de l’extraction des ressources. En explorant l’architecture, l’histoire et l’économie de la culture de l’extraction des ressources naturelles au Canada, le projet présente la montée d’un « empire mondial des ressources » d’où « le Canada a émergé comme entité politique à cause de sa géographie plutôt qu’en dépit d’elle », selon le vénéré économiste politique Harold Innis. Du point de vue des infrastructures territoriales et des écologies politiques de l’urbanisme des ressources, EXTRACTION présente des médias contemporains et historiques de plusieurs points de vue culturels, spatiaux et industriels. Réunissant les perspectives du monde des affaires, de l’histoire, de l’art, de l’activisme et d’ailleurs, le projet repense la position mondiale du Canada, où se trouvent 75 % des sociétés de prospection et d’extraction minières de la planète.
Dirigée par l’aménagiste urbain et architecte paysagiste Pierre Bélanger, l’équipe réunit : OPSYS, une organisation de design et de médias, dirigée par Christopher Alton and Zannah Matson, en collaboration avec : Geoffrey Thün, Kathy Velikov et Colin Ripley du cabinet d’architectes RVTR, Nina-Marie Lister de l’Ecological Design Lab de l’Université Ryerson et Kelsey Blackwell de Studio Blackwell.
L'EXTRACTION est une production d’exposition multimédia, auquel participeront d’éminents Canadiens dont Michael Awad, Jennifer Baichwal, Edward Burtynsky, Nick de Pencier, Eriel Deranger, Max Haiven, Thomas King, Alessandra Ponte, John Van Nostrand, Mel Watkins et Suzanne Zeller pour n’en nommer que quelques-uns.EXTRACTION sera inaugurée à Venise : du 27 mai au 27 novembre 2016. La Biennale internationale d’architecture de Venise, la plus prestigieuse vitrine de nouveaux projets de design par des talents émergents, attire plus de 350 000 visiteurs tous les deux ans. Le conservateur de la Biennale internationale d’architecture de Venise 2016 est l’architecte chilien et fondateur d’ELEMENTAL, Alejandro Araneva.
