Project Report: Decolonizing the Arboretum

Matt Canaran and the Friends of Allan Gardens submitted a final report for the project "DECOLONIZING THE ARBORETUM: Indigenous Tree Interpretation and Language Keeping in Allan Gardens."

"The Friends of Allan Gardens is deeply grateful to the Landscape Architecture Canada Foundation for supporting the Indigenous Language and Culture Keeping Project at Allan Gardens. Guided by community Elders and Knowledge Keepers, the project evolved from a simple effort to label trees and plants into a deeper journey of understanding our relationships with the land and the cultural teachings connected to the plants growing here.

Over two full seasonal cycles, we engaged in immersive learning—participating in storytelling, and seasonal ceremonies that revealed the cultural and spiritual significance of plants in many different Indigenous traditions, and the times of year that those plants were significant. This process taught us that naming alone was not enough; respect and understanding of the ceremonial calendar and seasonal cycles were required before sharing these stories publicly.

With the Elders’ guidance, we will begin finally installing multi-lingual tree and plant signage in Allan Gardens in winter 2025 and 2026. As signage alone is not enough, the Friends of Allan Gardens will continue with the seasonal programs inspired by this journey. LACF's support has helped to ensure Indigenous languages and stories are heard, seen, and felt on this land, forever.  Miigwetch, Nya:weh, Tizameh."
