1/ Annual Grant proposals for 2020 are in...
Faye Langmaid, Chair of the Grants Committee reports that “the grant committee received 18 grant submissions with 15 in the professional category (includes PhD students) and 3 student submissions to be adjudicated. The jury will have some interesting reads and difficult decisions to make over the next month and a half.” Results will be announced in January.

In 2019 the Landscape Architecture Canada Foundation (LACF) will have awarded 15 scholarships that recognize 14 deserving students across the country for their superior academic performance, leadership skills and original design work and research. The LACF Board extends congratulations to all!

In 2018-19, three (3) new scholarship endowment funds were established and fundraising efforts to fully endow them is ongoing. Three new scholarships including the Frederick Gage Todd National Scholarship, the LACF Indigenous scholarship and the Canadian Landscape Charter | U of Calgary LACF Scholarship will be awarded in 2020. LACF’s annual scholarship investment will raise to over $25,000. LACF believes that supporting in our LA students and future leaders of the profession is a sound investment for a better future.

4 / A Profile of Ian McAskile or...Maglin steps up again!
LACF is grateful to all our generous donors for their support and every once in a while, one of them steps up and stands out. These are our LACF Champions. We want you to know who they are, what they do and why they do it. We want you to meet Ian McAskile, President of Maglin Site Furniture.

Ian McAskile got his start in the outdoor furniture industry in the late ‘70’s and founded Maglin in 1983 to meet the demand for custom products. The company began working in the Toronto region and has grown to supply projects across North America. and the product line has grown to include a full range of site furniture.
Lighting specially developed for Crerar Quad at the University of Chicago demonstrates Maglin’s ability to innovate and to craft sophisticated works shaped by clients’ visions.
Maglin is tightly focused on the landscape sector for good reason. McAskile says “landscape architecture has grown in stature tremendously” in the scope and nature of projects undertaken. After decades spent working with LAs, he finds the profession has found a new level of confidence. He senses that landscape architects “know who they are and what they’re doing” and that the public increasingly recognizes the value of the profession.
On becoming the LACF platinum sponsor for 3 years running, McAskile says he was looking “to support a good cause.” Maglin recognized that the Foundation needed to look beyond landscape architects to invest, and stepped up. Their support goes beyond contributing financially to the Foundation. The Maglin team lent a hand in refreshing and updating the LACF website in 2018 and in 2019, and helped initiate a renewal of the Foundation’s fundraising strategy with their technical expertise. But still McAskile says, “I think we could do a lot more.”
Maglin’s own success, their generous support of LACF, and their commitment to assist the Foundation to increase our reach make Ian McAskile a real champion. As this bulletin goes out, Maglin confirms that they are on board for 2020 as platinum partner and in closing Ian adds “I challenge other companies to join us and invest in making the world a better place by supporting the Foundation’s work.”
