A Focus on the History of the Profession
Context
The Manitoba Association of Landscape Architects (MALA) established the Günter A. Schoch Bursary Fund under the auspices of the Landscape Architecture Canada Foundation (LACF) in 1994. It was done in recognition of the extensive legacy of Günter A. Schoch, and his enduring contribution to the profession in general, and in particular, to the MALA. The first bursary was awarded in December 1997.
Topic
This bursary is dedicated to “landscape architectural research into the history and status of the profession in Canada."
Criteria
A project is eligible for funding from this bursary when it consists of research into the history and status of the profession of landscape architecture in Canada including its organizations and notable practitioners.
Procedure
The grants jury reviews all grant applications to ensure that they meet the general award criteria and then determines whether a project is eligible for funding from this specific bursary. Applicants can specify that they wish to be considered for this funding. The Bursary is open to landscape architects, allied professionals, community-driven initiatives and landscape architecture students.
Award amount
A bursary of $1,500 is offered annually and can be combined with funding from the overall grants budget. This bursary fund is fully endowed.#118

Who was Günter A. Schoch?
Günter Schoch, MALA, FCSLA, emigrated to Canada from his Germany in 1953 and soon after gained employment with the Winnipeg Board of Parks and Recreation. He made many valuable contributions as a practitioner throughout his career until his retirement in 1989. Günter served for 20 years as MALA Treasurer (1978-97) and eight years as MALA’s first Executive Director (1989-97). At the national level, he accepted the office of LACF Treasurer in 1992, when he also became Secretary-Treasurer of the College of Fellows and held these positions until 2008. Günter Schoch passed away on September 7, 2017. He was 88 years old.
